Calmast
July 30th & 31st (Afternoons) Cathedral Square
Over the Saturday and Sunday of the Spraoi Festival weekend, the bright and colourful tents of CALMAST (The Centre for the Advancement of Learning of Maths, Science, and Technology) will be in residence at Cathedral Square, presenting some fantastic street theatre performances, as well as offering a rare opportunity for people of all ages to take part in workshops, demonstrations, and activities over the two days, for some hands-on experience to explore the excitement of science.
CALMAST works with Waterford City and County Council, groups, and schools to develop the Southeast, with Waterford as it’s Gateway City, as a Science Region. Established in 2013 at SETU, this ground-breaking organisation draws on staff, students, and resources from the university to achieve the vital, national goal of promotion STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths), and has reached hundreds of thousands of people with science supplements and publications, and at events.

Spraoi N.E.S.T. is a programme run by the festival to nurture and encourage street artists with new and strong ideas. N.ES.T. artists are mentored at Spraoi Studios and their work is showcased at the festival and frequently then transfers to other festivals nationally and internationally.
Spraoi have once again partnered with the Irish Street Arts, Circus and Spectacle Network to bring you the N.E.S.T. (New Emerging Street Talent) 2022 featuring the artistic duet: Hands Down Circus.
This exchange programme will offer the chosen artists a two-week residency at Spraoi Studios with an experienced street arts mentor to practically test and interrogate their presentation ideas, as well as a three-day residency at Great Yarmouth in the U.K. Hand’s Down Circus will tour their N.E.S.T. work to the following festivals: Spraoi (Ireland), SURGE (Scotland), Out There (England) and Green Man (Wales).
